Atripla
Jun 20, 2008

I was taken off Trizivir to allow for initiation of RBV + PegIntron and to avoid side effects caused by AZT + RBV etc. and because I was having pretty bad metabolic side effects to Trizivir. Would you recommend Atripla to reduce the pill burden of my current regimen (Truvada, Telzir, Norvir) which is working fine and causing no side efffects? Are similar metabolic side effects associated with Atripla? Which of the two regimens (current or Atripla) is recommended when starting RBV and PegIntron therapy? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Response from Dr. Henry

Atripla has less of a bone marrow suppressive effect that Trizivir so can often be more easily used while receiving RBV + PegIntron therapy for hepatitis C. In addition Atripla is a more effective HIV treatment overall than Trizivir so Atripla would be the preferred regimen. Side effects of Atripla are driven by the efavirenz related central nervous system side effects which usually diminish over the first 2-4 weeks of treatment. KH
