d4t to AZT
Jun 19, 2008

I have suffered severe lipoathrophy, i tested positive in june 2005.iwas immediately placed on Stavudine, neviripine and lamuvidine. i did quite well and later started noticing that i lost muscles and fat on my thighs, buttocks, arms, and legs and in turn increased fat on the belly and back of my neck. I later dicovred this site and complained to my doctor who confirmed my condition and replaced the stavudine with zidovudine(because those are the only available medicatins here). the thing i think i see a slow revesal of this fatin those areas although my neck and belly are still very big, but form what i read AZT also causes the same thing. could it be my imagination or the fat is actually returning? my CD4 count is over 1,030 but i havnt checked my viral load because iam in africa and that is not available.

Response from Dr. Henry

There has been little published about what happens to peripheral fat when D4T is switched to AZT. AZT generally has a milder effect on peripheral fat so some patients may note a slow increase after the switch but likely not as much as would be expected switching to a drug like tenofovir or abacavir.
