Hi Dr. Conway,
you recently gave a response regarding the accuracy of HIV tests with respect to group O. Is it safe to include oraquick as one of these tests that will pick up group B and O??
thank you!!!

Response from Dr. Conway

The OraQuick test is subject to the same standards as all of the other diagnostic tests for HIV antibodies. As such it is as good as standard blood tests for group M (iclusing clade B) and group ) strains. This being said, if there is a significant risk of infection having occurred and there is a likelihood that the infecting strain is group O (or even HIV-2), serious consideration should be given to doing alternate tests (viral load, CD4 count, etc...) if the initial antibody screening test is negative.
