Sed Rate and HIV
Feb 6, 2001

Doctors, I asked this question a couple of weeks ago and have not seen a response. I need your valuable input to calm my fears. I have been feeling lousy for the last 9 months, since my last possible risky exposure. I have had some night sweats, diarhea attacks once a week, my tongue looks somewhat whitish, and I fall asleep easily at night. I had a negative ELISA hiv1/2 after nine months. I still feel I am infected. My GP told me that if I were, my sed rate would be much higher than a 1. I understand that the sed rate is non-specific, but would you agree with my GP's statement? I worry about the undectable strains: O or N. Can you please give me your valuable opinion? Please. Thank you

There is no elevation in a sed rate that I would consider diagnostic of HIV, it is a very non-specific test. However, on the basis of your negative Elisa I believe that you are not infected. If your anxiety becomes overwhelming, I would recommend seeking a therapist.
