Low Platlet Count
Jun 30, 2008

Ive Been HIV Positive for 15 Years, Im 43. Ive never had to take any HIV Meds and have never had any Oportunistic Infections. Two Years ago I started developing a very low Platelet Count, 15K. My doctor suggested I start on my Meds, Atripla. Ive been is for 9 Months and they have had no effect on my Platelets. Everything else is normal. HIV is Undetectable as usual. What are my options? Hormones? Ive had a test and my body is producing tons of Platlets, but they are being destroyed by atibodies.

Response from Dr. McGowan

Antiretroviral treatment is the mainstay to manage your low platelet count. If you need to bring up your platelet count more aggressively due to symptoms, I would then consider using oral steroids or intravenous immuneglobulin (or IVIG). However, both agents need to be used with care and your provider may refer you to a hematologist for guidance.

Good luck, Joe
