Dec 19, 2001
Please answer my question, i'm losing sleep over this..
recently i used a razor in my bathroom and i know my sisters friend is HIV+, what would happen if she used that razor and then i used it a couple days later..am i at risk of getting HIV? i'm really worried about this because i've read that you can..keep in mind, i washed the razor off with hot water before i used it like i always do..she also has Hep. C, is there a risk i could get that too?? please answer me quickly...thanks...

There is a risk for transmission of HIV or HCV (hepatitis C virus) any time you come into contact with infected blood. However, the odds of transmission happening in your case are quite low. It is highly unlikely that HIV or HCV would remain infectious when exposed to the environment for a day or more. You also don't have any evidence that your friend actually used your razor.
There is little evidence to support HIV transmission occurring through contacts with inanimate objects. See http://thebody.com/cdc/survival.html.
