oral tests and HIV-2
Aug 2, 2000

After 2 oral tests one at 4 months and another at 7 months, both negative, I continue to have sweats and fevers.

Have had scalp 'pimples' that come and go since the possible infection and continuing unwell feelings. "Hunger pains" and "active feeling" glands add to the dilemma

I seem to have had all the typical HIV symptoms but at a much less degree than those stated in the resources available. e.g. not soaking sweats

The other issue is that my partner is also experiencing fever symptoms.

Do the oral tests cover HIV-2 antibodies and if not should I be tested? - or am I a "worried well" - I hope so.

Response from Mr. Kull

The OraSure test is specifically for HIV-1 antibody detection. But remember, HIV-1 antibody tests will detect HIV-2 antibodies about 70% of the time. Read my response to OraSure if you want to learn more about the test.

If you have not had HIV-related exposure to anyone from West Africa where HIV-2 is endemic, I would say testing for HIV-2 is unnecessary. The last time I checked, there were under 100 reported cases of HIV-2 infection in the U.S.

There are simply so many things that can be causing your symptoms. It doesn't sound like it's HIV (I'm basing this on your negative tests). Have you talked to a doctor about this? Don't rely on me to diagnose you. We might be missing something obvious.
