How fast can you get test results? How much do tests cost?

About how long does is take to recieve the results from a home HIV test?
Response from Mr. Sowadsky
Thank you for your question. According to Home Access, the only FDA approved home HIV testing company, the time it takes to get your test results depends upon how much you pay.
For results in a week, the cost of the test is $39.99 plus $12.95 shipping and handling, for a total cost of $52.94.
For results in 3 days, the cost of the test is $49.99 plus $12.95 shipping and handling, for a total cost of $62.94.
These tests are only available for sale in the United States. For more information on home testing, see the posting How accurate are the home HIV tests?.
Testing through local health departments, and some AIDS Service Organizations, generally takes about a week to get your results (but this time varies from clinic to clinic). These tests are sometimes free or they are very low cost (generally about $10 to $15, although the price can vary from clinic to clinic). Some places charge by sliding scale (the less you can afford, the less you pay).
Some private testing companies will do HIV testing through labs in your local area. As an example, one company charges approximately $70 for test results in 5 days, and charges approximately $90 for test results in 1-2 days. These are not home tests. You have to go to a lab in your local area to get tested.
Your private doctor can also do these tests, for whatever fee they wish, and they can often have test results back in several days to a week.
Generally speaking, the faster you want your test results, the more you will pay. The tests I have discussed here are for the standard antibody tests. Other specialized HIV tests, like PCR tests and others, can cost much more (literally hundreds of dollars in some cases). Remember that costs are subject to change at any time, and the information here applies only to the United States (costs and the time to get results may vary in other countries). Where available, rapid antibody tests such as SUDS tests, may give results the same day. However these tests are not presently available in many areas.
