Possible symptom?
Nov 25, 1996

Mr. Sowadsky, Is a persistent cold that remains for several weeks a sign of possible HIV infection? Thanks

Response from Mr. Sowadsky

Hi.Thank you for your question. A persistent cold that remains for several weeks can be due to many, many things. There is no way you can assume that your symptoms are AIDS related, solely based on your cold not getting better. If your symptoms continue to persist (or get worse), it's still important to seek medical attention REGARDLESS of what you think the problem is. If you have put yourself at risk for HIV in the past, then consider getting tested for HIV. But having cold symptoms that remain for several weeks is not, in of itself, an indication for HIV infection.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to call the Centers for Disease Control at 1.800.232.4636 (Nationwide). Rick Sowadsky MSPH CDS
