Your room mate has herpes and uses your towell. What do you do?

Feb 14, 1997

What about a room mate with herpes who shares the bathroom and dishes? What conceivable risk could ever happen? How do you know? What precautions might be taken?

Response from Mr. Sowadsky

Hi. Thank you for your question.

Because Herpes and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's) are NOT transmitted through toilet seats, towels, showers, dishes, and other forms of casual contact, you don't need to take any precautions. You are not at risk of infection from any form of casual contact. Herpes is strictly transmitted by DIRECT contact with the lesions of another person. It is NOT transmitted by towels or other household objects. We have known about herpes for many, many years and we know it is not transmitted by casual contact. So just living with an infected person does not put you at risk. You have to have sex or other intimate contact with them in order for you to be at risk. If you have any further questions, please feel free to call the Centers for Disease Control at 1.800.232.4636 (Nationwide).

How is herpes transmitted exactly...fluid mucosal contact?
