PLEASE RYAN ANSWER
Nov 25, 2001

I'm sorry I know you are busy but I really need to know, if I had what is considered high risk. I had a boyfriend over 2 1/2 yrs ago and he took my virginity. It was off guard and very fast, however he did break my hymen, and I did bleed after that. As soon as I felt it I pushed him off in a panic. I couldn't believe that it happened. I'm pretty sure he didn't do anything. It was basically pop and done. I guess I was very naive and stupid,I shouldn't have even been in that situation. I haven't thought about it until recently, when I saw a program on tv. I now have a fiancee and a 14mth old baby. What do you think? I have no reason to believe he had anything, but the scary thing is you don't know right? My boyfriend thinks I have nothing to worry about. I have to admit that I usually do worry about just about everything. I'm sorry I believe I'm babbling now but please just tell me what you believe my risk factor would be. I don't believe I had any std's because I was a virgin, and like I said the contact was over in like 2 seconds.

Response from Mr. Kull

Transmission is possible in the scenario you describe, but the odds of transmission are small. If your contact with your partner's semen was limited, your risk for infection is low. You also need to take some other aspects about this incident into consideration, like what was your partner's risk for infection? Men who are at considered at risk for infection are those who have sex with other men, share injection needles, or have sexual contact with people in high-prevalence groups (for example, men in certain regions of Africa).

If you remain concerned about being infected, maybe you should consider getting an HIV test. People often find great relief from their anxiety upon receiving an HIV negative result. If your anxiety persists, consider talking with a mental health professional about your worries.
