colonic then scared
Nov 25, 2001

Hello, I am a little worried about an incident and I am not sure what category it falls in and I searched for the words and found nothing. I went the other day for a colonic and everything was fine and the therapist took out the tube and the lube from a sealed bag and as she was doing it the "ketchup packet" sized lube fell on the floor. She picked it up off the floor and then put it with the rest of the items. She then opened the lube with scissors and applied it to the speculum to insert in my rectum. I know it was closed when hitting the floor but should I be concerned about the outside of it hitting the floor then touching the speculum? I am worry about this and I wasnt sure what category to ask it, all help is appreciated.

Response from Mr. Kull

HIV is not likely to survive in the environment long enough for transmission to be likely in the scenario you describe (http://www.thebody.com/cdc/survival.html). Even if HIV did survive long enough when exposed to the environment, the odds of you having come into contact with HIV are infinitely small.

It's important to remember that HIV is only known to be transmitted through the following three ways:

1) Sexual contact: anal, vaginal, and oral sex

2) Blood-to-blood contact: sharing injection needles, occupational exposures, blood transfusions (which is rare in the U.S.)

3) Mother-to-infant: either through delivery or during breast feeding

Any contact that you have that does not fall into one of these categories is not considered a risk for HIV transmission.
