STD's through urine?
Dec 4, 1997
Can STD's get passed through urine? IE in the men's locker room showers if I walk in someone's urine could I catch something? What about toilet seats or even shaking hands with an infected individual?
Response from Mr. Sowadsky
Hi. Thank you for your question. You cannot get STDs through any form of casual contact! You are not at any risk of infection under the situations described in your question. Other than Cytomegalovirus (CMV), exposure to urine does not pose anysignificant risk, as far a STDs are concerned. CMV can be transmitted through DIRECT exposure of urine to mucous membranes (but NOT casual contact like that described in your question). CMV is usually harmless, other than in persons with severely damaged immune systems.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to call the Centers for Disease Control at 1.800.232.4636 (Nationwide).
