 Thank you for your question. Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma are both bacterial infections. Certain types of Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma have been linked to Nonspecific Urethritis (NSU) and Non-Gonococcal Urethritis (NGU). However, not everyone who has these infections will have symptoms of NSU/NGU. Both of these are infections are treatable with antibiotics. It has been well established that these infections can be transmitted through unprotected vaginal intercourse. It is much less clear whether these infections can be transmitted through oral sex or anal intercourse. Studies have shown that condom use does reduce the incidence of these infections. So just like any other sexually transmitted disease, consistent and correct condom use will significantly reduce your risk for both of these infections, and will reduce your risks of having NSU/NGU.
