Having Sex with an affected Partner
Nov 12, 2001

I had sexual intercourse with an infected woman. A condom was used. She stated she is on medication and that we were very safe. What are my chances of becoming infected?

Response from Mr. Kull

Condoms that remain intact during sex are highly effective in preventing the transmission of HIV. They also provide protection against many other sexually transmitted infections, but not all. Any sexually transmitted infection that can be transmitted by skin-to-skin contact (like herpes, HPV/genital warts, and syphilis) can still be transmitted because condoms can't cover all areas of skin in the genital region.

Laboratory studies demonstrate that HIV cannot pass through the latex of a condom. Studies of sexually active couples with one HIV infected partner demonstrated that HIV was rarely, if ever, transmitted when condoms were used consistently. See:
