Anal sex and prostate problems
Oct 5, 1999
Is anal sex safe? I also would like to know if it effects prostate function or if it can increase your chances of prostate cancer
Response from Mr. Sowadsky
Thank you for your question. Unprotected anal intercourse may technically increase the risk for bacterial prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) for the inserting (top) partner. Bacterial prostatitis is curable with antibiotics. If a man has bacterial prostatitis, he will not be putting his partner at risk of infection (in other words, this is not normally considered a sexually transmitted disease in the traditional sense).
In regard to prostate cancer, I am not aware of any link between anal intercourse and this type of cancer. For more information about prostate cancer (and other forms of cancer), visit the American Cancer Society website.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to call the Centers for Disease Control at 1.800.232.4636 (Nationwide).
