What are the rates of HIV-1 and HIV-2 in the USA?
Nov 17, 1999
What states in the US are reported to have the highest rate of HIV infected people? What cities? Is HIV II really still very rare in the US or is it growing like HIV I did before people knew about it? Thank you for your help.
Response from Mr. Sowadsky
Thank you for your question.
In regard to the rates of HIV in the United States:
Unfortunately, since HIV is presently not reportable in all states and cities, nobody can answer your question. All we can say is that in the USA, it is estimated that the number of new cases of HIV infection has been remaining relatively steady at about 40,000 cases each year (although some preliminary data indicates that this number may be slowly rising, especially among Gay men).
In regard to your question on HIV-2:
In comparison to the literally thousands and thousands of cases of HIV-1 in the USA, there have only been 77 cases of HIV-2 reported (as of 12/31/97). There is nothing to suggest that the rate of HIV-2 in the USA has risen to any significant degree, and all indications are that HIV-2 is still extremely rare in the United States.
