AIDS AND MARIJUANA
Aug 19, 1997

IS IT SAFE TO SMOKE A PIPE WITH SOMEONE WHO IS INFECTED WITH THE AIDS VIRUS?

Response from Mr. Sowadsky

Hi. Thank you for your question. The answer to this question is yes and no. In terms of the pipe itself, you are not at any significant risk, since HIV is not transmitted through any form of casual contact (including sharing pipes). It is also not transmitted through saliva alone. So in this sense, you are not at risk of infection.

Where the risk does exist, is the fact that you were smoking marijuana. If you use any drug that affects judgement (including marijuana, alcohol, cocaine etc.), these drugs do increase your risk of infection with HIV and other STD's. This is because you are more likely to engage in high risk activities while under the influence of these drugs. You are also less likely to use condoms, or use them correctly. So sharing the pipe itself does not pose a risk of infection. But when you get high from the marijuana, this drug affects your judgement to the point where you may end up engaging in high risk activities.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to call the Centers for Disease Control at 1.800.232.4636 (Nationwide).
