Which is of greater risk?
Nov 5, 2001

Ryan

I just want to know which is of greater risk for contracting hiv? Having a girl perform oral sex on you or you performing oral sex on a girl( not while on her period yuck)?

Response from Mr. Kull

The risk for infection with HIV is clearly greater for the person performing oral sex on a woman because fluids that potentially transmit HIV (vaginal secretions) are coming into contact with mucous membranes (the mouth). However, there are only a few documented cases of transmission occurring through performing oral sex on a woman, making the risk for infection during cunnilingus very low.

Receiving oral sex is not considered a viable mode of transmission because the fluids (saliva) coming into contact with the mucous membranes of your genitals does not transmit HIV. There is no evidence of HIV being transmistted through contact with saliva.

Remember, it is possible to contract or transmit certain sexually transmitted infection through oral sex, so risk is not totally absent. See http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/SafeSex/Current/Q52472.qna for more information on oral transmission of STDs.
