HIV in needle
Sep 28, 2001

I like to know how long HIV can survive inside of needle. i mean abandoned drug needles that might found everyday life. How long these needles are dangerous?

Response from Mr. Kull

This question has been answered in detail in this forum; see my response to "Lifespan of virus in needle" (http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/SafeSex/Archive/TransmissionNon/Q9637.qna).

Your risk for infection when coming into contact with discarded needles really depends on variables involved. If you are actually using a discarded needle for injecting substances, then you might be at risk for infection. Accidental punctures with discarded needles probably do not pose much of a risk for infection.
