|HIV from electronic cigarettes PLEASE HELP
Jun 23, 2014
Hello Dr.Southall, I was wondering if you could catch HIV from electronic cigarettes. My lower law was rough but not an open wound and was wondering if you share electronic cigarettes if you could get HIV. Thank You for your time.

HI The risk is incredibly low to no risk. There would have to be a large amount of blood from a person with a HIV and a high viral load and then you would have to have a large open wound on your mouth. For this to happen you would have to see a large amount of blood on the cigarette and I hope seeing that you would not put it in your mouth!
HIV transmission can only occur when there is a direct and prolonged exposure to body fluids, semen, vaginal fluid, blood or mother to child through breast feeding. This most commonly occurs through unprotected vaginal or anal sex and sharing of needles. Casual contact, sharing utensils, drinking after someone, etc are not way for HIV transmission to occur. If you go to this link HIV101 it will take you to our page that talks about the ways in which HIV is and is not transmitted.
Be well and stay safe, Shannon
