Needlestick after subcutaneous in cat with fiv
May 27, 2014
I gave my cat who has FIV antibodies in her blood subcutaneous fluid. I then gave myself deep needle stick when trying to remove the needle. I am scared I can get HIV from FIV. I know most sites say no, but there are cases of humans getting SIV. Should I get tested for HIV? When? Is there any possibility of getting HIV from FIV? Or from FIV vaccine?
Response from Dr. Hightow-Weidman
Hello there While FIV and HIV are both lentiviruses, humans cannot be infected by FIV, nor can cats be infected by HIV. The viruses are "host" specific. There is also no risk in terms of any current FIV vaccines. Take care LHW
