speck of blood in eye
Feb 26, 2014
Iam a dental assistant and as i was flossing a patient, i felt a speck of his bloody saliva land in my eye, if this was an HIV infected patient would i be at risk of infection?
Response from Dr. Hightow-Weidman
Hello there HIV transmission through eyes is highly unlikely. For this to occur there has to be a high amount of blood and the person has to have a high viral load. The small amount of what hit your eye would not put you at risk for HIV. Even when a significant amount of HIV-tainted blood comes into contact with a mucous membrane, the chance of HIV transmission is only 0.09%. And your speck would thus be much much less. Take care DR W
