HIV Lifespan if Can't Reproduce in Body

Feb 21, 2014

I was wondering if a person is on PrEP and is exposed to HIV but the virus is unable to take hold in the long would it live before it dies or is clear from the body. Kind of like how long after possible infection would be recommended before going off PrEP if you decide you wanted to.

Response from Ms. Southall

Hi Outside of the body HIV begins to die immediately and becomes unable to infect. Inside the body HIV needs CD4 cells to infect to replicate itself and it has 2 days or 48 hours before it dies. So being on PrEP allows for the body to try and protect itself against that interaction between HIV and the CD4 cell.

Hope this helps.

Be well and stay safe, Shannon
