I had receptive anal sex last night with a partner and noticed afterwards that the condom had broke near the shaft end (not sure if it occurred during sex or when it was pulled off or perhaps later as I didn't notice the break until I got home, yes I took the used condom w me). My partner did not ejaculate while in me. We mostly used water based lube, I say mostly bc some baby oil was used during foreplay but switched to water based when having sex (I didn't realize he had used baby oil until afterwards bc it was dark). We had sex for probably 10 minutes. Before having sex he showed me that he tested negative in early July (it is now mid Oct) and says he is exclusively a top. I am concerned though that he doesnt know know to use baby oil. What are my risks of infection? Assuming it broke during intercourse, would the condom still provide some protection since it was only broken at the top and he didnt ejaculate? Should I start PEP? It's only been 12 hours at this point, but I'm nervous.

Hello there Given that the condom broke you would be at risk for HIV. Obviously the risk is less given that your partner didn't ejaculate but precum can still contain HIV and thus the risk is still relevant. In addition, there would be some concern that the baby oil caused some destruction of the condom and could have resulted in it being less effective. I would certainly discuss your risk with a provider and consider PEP. Take care, LHW
