Is PEP Effective If You Have A Cold
Oct 30, 2013
Good morning! Over the weekend, unfortunately, during a sexual encounter with someone with unknown status (he said negative, but obviously, this is not known for sure), the condom broke during vaginal intercourse. I sought PEP and was prescribed the 28 day regimen.
I have been getting sick the past couple of days. I am wondering if PEP will still be effective against combating HIV if I have a cold at the time (WBC was 13.4 due to being on high dose of Prednisone).
Response from Dr. Hightow-Weidman
Hello there- There is no evidence that PEP would be any less effective for those with a cold or other type of infection. I would certainly continue for the full 28 day course. Take care, LHW
