Whats the risk if me an HIV+ woman giving the virus to my partner after a total hysterectomy, having unprotected sex?
Sep 12, 2013

Ive had sex 2 times wth my new partner unprotected. I am a HIV+ woman with an undetectable viral load and over 800 t-cell count.I had a complete hysterectomy in June this year.Does the chance of tranmission go down after a hysterectmy?

Response from Ms. Southall

Hi Having a hysterectomy doesn't affect HIV transmission at all. Having an undetectable viral load does affect HIV transmission and dramatically decreases the risk of HIV transmission. There is a study that found that someone with an undetectable viral load can have a reduction in transmission by up to 96% and of course you put a condom on and that decreases the risk of HIV transmission by even more.

Be well and stay safe, Shannon
