UNPROTECTED SEX WITH SEX WORKER
Aug 26, 2013

I had unprotected sex with a sex worker whom i dont know hiv status. the sex lasted 1-2 minutes. I ejaculated outside. I have started PEP within 1 hour after exposure using Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/lamivudine/efavirenz. Am i at risk to contract HIV?

Response from Dr. Hightow-Weidman

Hello there- Yes, you would be considered at risk for HIV given you had unprotected sex with a person whose HIV status is unknown. I would agree with your decision to start PEP and I would recommend continuing for the full 28 day course. This will give you the best chance of remaining uninfected. You also started PEP very early which is great as well. To save yourself this stress in the future, perhaps considering condom use makes sense. Take care, LHW
