Cracked lips

Jul 10, 2013

Hi dr. Shannon

Is there a possibility of transmittion if I drank from the same bottle with a peson whos lips were cracked and had some blood on and it was on the bottle neck(edge) and if i have bleeding gums? Thank you!

Response from Ms. Southall

Hi You cannot get HIV from casual contact or sharing utensils or cups. HIV transmission occurs when there is a direct exchange of body fluid through anal, vaginal or oral sex. HIV begins to die once it leaves the body and is unable to infect. If there were blood on the bottle it would have to be a large volume of blood.

Be well and stay safe, Shannon
