|Forgot to wash my hands
Jun 29, 2013
This is the second time I post the same question because I've been so worried that I might be infected with HIV. I am a lab worker and about a week ago I was handling blood samples that might be HIV infected (since the area where the blood samples were taken has a high prevalence of HIV infection). After I took off my gloves (no visible blood), I ate with my hands because I was in a hurry and forgot to wash my hands and I might accidentally touched the outer part of my gloves. Can I be HIV infected?? because a week later I started to have a flu and it made me extremely worried.. please kindly answer my question..

Thanks for your question,
There is no risk for HIV from this situation. HIV can not live long outside of the body when in the plain open air.
That said, as a lab worker, you should have access to information about how to ensure your health. I would encourage you to talk to your supervisor (or refer to your work manuals) if you feel like you don't know enough about how various blood-borne infections work. Your supervisor should be your first contact with questions about possible exposures also.
Hope this helps!
