Nasal mucosa

Jun 26, 2013

I was wondering if blood on the nose is any real risk of tranmission. If one was to get blood in their nose (through splashing in an occupational exposure or picking your nose with blood) is there any real risk? Also is there a risk if there was some bleeding in the nose but has scabbed over?

Response from Mr. Glenn

Thanks for the question,

Remember that HIV is only transmitted when a body fluid carrying HIV (only blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or breast milk) comes out of someone's body and goes immediately/directly inside of someone else's body.

Keeping this in mind, it would be very difficult for the situation you're describing to be risky. This is because somehow the blood you're describing would need to get inside your nose in a significant amount right after it left someone else's body.

If you're taking about an incident in a lab or medical environment then this may make what you're talking about easier. But in that case there should be procedures at your organization to handle this when it happens.

Hope this helps!
