|HIV Positive mother breastfeeding
Apr 22, 2013
Good Day I would like to know can a HIV positive mother breastfeed her HIV negative baby? I heard that it is possible and why would this be? What happens if there is a crack in the mothers nipples? How do u explain this.

Hi We highly or strongly recommend that a HIV positive mother does not breast feed her child. There are studies coming out that show that someone living with HIV on medication and having an undetectable viral load reduces the risk of transmission by up to 96%. But there is still a risk. So again, strongly recommend not breast feeding to keep the baby uninfected.
Be well and stay safe, Shannon
