nonoxynol-9 laytex condoms
Apr 17, 2013

My ? Is does it matter if the condom is nonoxynol-9 laytex or water based, how is there hiv transmission when the condom stays intact should I be worried if the condom didn't tear or fail what so ever, please answer my ? thank u very much......

Response from Dr. Wohl

Condoms work if used properly and do not break. N-9 is a spermicide used as a lubricant in some condoms. But, N-9 lubricated condoms are not recommended as the chemical can irritate genital surfaces and this could increase risk of HIV infection when HIV is present.

However, if the choice is between using an N-9 containing condom or nothing, the N-9 condom is definitely what you should use.
