| Question regarding possible route of transmission Feb 27, 2013 Hello Dr! I moved in a new flat 5 months ago and I cleaned it myself. In the bathroom there was a weird stain on a tile so I cleaned it using a sponge and bleach. However, this stain could have been blood from the previous tenants and I had a hangnail. Could this be a possible route of HIV transmission? Note that this month me and my boyfriend get ill often. Should I get tested? Thank you in advance. |

Response from Dr. Hightow-Weidman
Hello there HIV is NOT easy to transmit. It is a fragile virus, and breaks down quickly, if not in the right conditions. It can ONLY infect you if it enters your bloodstream, through an open wound or mucus membranes.HIV breaks down VERY quickly when exposed to air. It can ONLY survive outside the human body for a VERY short period of time. Some say 30 seconds or less. So, even IF the floor stain was from blood that at one point in time contained HIV, it would certainly not be infective it at that point. Take care, LHW | |||||||||
