your answer about "not a worried well"

Jan 24, 2013

Dear Dr. Wohl, sorry for my bad english. In a question from 13.1. a patient had a lot of symptoms. But he had a lot of negative antibody AND pcr-tests. Your answer was he should do a cd4-test. My questions for you: I had a risk and symptoms, but all hiv-tests neg. (elisa AND proviral hiv-pcr for hiv1 and hiv2) I have theese tests repeatedly done about 1 year after the risk. But my cd4 was only 600/35%. Is it possible to have hiv with my neg. tests but this low cd4? (neg. elisa for hiv1/2 after 3,6,12 months and negative hiv pcr for hiv1 and hiv2 after 3,6 and 12 months). Thank you very much for an answer.

Response from Dr. Wohl

I recommended the CD4 cell count to convince the questioner that his immune system was fine. In your case, a CD4 cell count of 600 should not be ac concern. The range of normal CD4 is pretty wide and a 600 cell count is within that range. Your HIV testing proves you are not HIV infected.
