Maybe you can help me understand

Nov 25, 2012

Hi Shannon,

People say that outside of the body hiv is almost impossible to catch. I've heard that it is actually unable to infect an individual outside the body after about a minute or so even in wet blood. Is that true? I've heard the term direct/immediate contact used quite a bit with regards to infectious blood out of the body. Could you explain that to me please?

Thanks a lot, Chad

Response from Ms. Southall

Hi Chad Yes HIV begins to die once it is outside of the body, within minutes. For HIV transmission there has to be a direct exchange of body fluid, through oral, anal, vaginal sex or blood exchange through sharing needles. Yes the exchange does need to be immediate as the virus again begins to die once it is outside of the body.

Hope this helps, be well and stay safe, Shannon
