HIV Test
Jun 22, 2012

I had an antibody test plus an RNA test done at approximately 63 days after suspected exposure to HIV. Both tests came back negative. I understand that the antibody test should be done at 90 days or more since it could take that long for antibodies to produce to detectable levels. My question is, can there be HIV present but not detected by an RNA test? I read competing views on the RNA test.

Response from Dr. Hightow-Weidman

Hello there- It would be very unlikely to have not have a detectable viral load as measured by the RNA test at 63 days post exposure. However, some people have a very low viral load after infection (while very rare) and this could be missed depending on the sensitivity of the viral load assay used. To be sure, I would advise testing again at 90 days. Take care, LHW
