I don't how i got here but I'm losing it.
Jun 13, 2012

I was at work and taking a dump. While I was sitting on the toilet my penis was touching the inside of the toilet bowl in the front THE WHOLE TIME! Why cant they make loo's with bigger toilet bowls. My penis shouldn't have to touch that disgusting toilet bowl.

What's the risk here given the worst possible scenario of HIV+ blood or secretions from genitalia hanging around the area that came into contact with my penis? I am a mid twenties male uncircumcised. (does the fact that I am uncircumsised increase my risk here)

Also the follwing day I was at a bar and long story short I ended up making out with a girl I have known for ages. Could I have spread it to her (french kissing tongue included for like an hour)?

I'm sorry for the details but I have no idea where this sudden HIV paranioa has come from.

Response from Dr. Hightow-Weidman

Hello there- No you cannot get HIV from a toilet seat. Let me explain why.

HIV is NOT easy to transmit. It is a fragile virus, and breaks down quickly, if not in the right conditions. It can ONLY infect you if it enters your bloodstream, through an open wound or mucus membranes. Now, I will see if I can relate these to your expierence.

First of all, it is highly unlikley you came into direct contact with any drops of blood or secretions on your penis (uncircumcised or not). However, even if your penis DID touch the blood, it could ONLY infect you if it was DIRECTLY on an open wound. Unbroken skin is a barrier to HIV, and HIV can not pass through your skin.

Secondly, the any blood on the toilet seat would have been in the process of drying. It would have probably been exposed to the air for at least a few minutes or more. HIV breaks down VERY quickly when exposed to air. It can ONLY survive outside the human body for a VERY short period of time. Some say 30 seconds or less. So, even IF the blood contained HIV, it was probably not able to transmit it at that point.

Hope this helps. Take care, LHW
