Concerned with HIV
May 26, 2012

Hi, I am a 19 year old girl and over a year ago a performed unprotected fellatio on a guy I did not know very well. He took advantage of me and it was my first and only sexual experience. A few days later I took some tests for STI's which all came out negative and an HIV test as well which came out negative. I am still concerned that I have obtained HIV, because usually there aren't any symptoms for it right away. He did not ejaculate in my mouth, which from what I understand lowers the risk. Is there a chance that I have HIV? Or am I worried for no reason? Thank you.

Response from Ms. Southall

Hi I'm glad to hear that your first set of tests came back negative but for HIV testing the guidelines are to be initially tested at 3 weeks then again at 3 months, if both of these tests are negative then so are you.

I would recommend getting the second test for HIV and if that is negative then you have no reasons to be concerned

Be well and stay safe, Shannon
