Hey doctor, I'm frightfully worried about an incident. I was at work and a colleague and I took a smoke break. We were sharing a cigarette and when she passed it to me I noticed some red stuff around the edges, my first instinct was blood cos there is no other possible explanation. And I'm even more worried cos I had cuts on my inner lip. Please tell me what my risk is of contracting HIV?

Response from Ms. Southall

Hi, Could your co worker have had lip stick on? This could be the red color that you saw. Sharing a cigarette does not carry a risk of HIV transmission.

Be well and stay safe, Shannon
