hiv in dried powder

Apr 26, 2012

I was just feeding my baby his first feed from a powder mix when I noticed a small piece of something red in the bowl. I ate some of the mix in case he caught anything so I would have it too,and threw out the red spec but what I want to know is if this was a piece of dried blood from somebody making the baby food could it have infected him? I know hiv dies quickly outside the body but I am stressing out over this. I once read hiv could survive in dry dust....Is powder dry dust? Also could it be "reactivated" by the fact I mixed the powder with liquid to make the mix?

Response from Ms. Southall

Hi HIV dies once it is outside of the body, it does not re-activate once it is put with liquid. My thought is that whatever was red in the formula was not blood, but if it were then if it had HIV in it, the HIV had died and there was not a way for transmission to occur.
