HIV from blood on toilet seat
Apr 18, 2012

Can you get HIV from sitting on menstrual blood or it splashing onto your vagina whilst peeing, how long will it take for the virus to die in the blood once left the body?

Thank you for your help in advance

Response from Ms. Southall

Hi HIV dies within minutes of leaving the body. It is possible to get HIV from sitting on menstrual fluid if you cut yourself on your way down to sitting on the toilet and the menstrual fluid was just placed there moments before you sat down. Splash back will not transmit the virus either.

Both ways you have asked about carry no risk of HIV transmission.

Be well and stay safe, Shannon
