"are condoms trully safe during anal sex" Feb 27, 2012 hello dr i recently had anal sex with another male high risk i know but anyway we both used condom i was top and the i was bottom anyway how safe are condoms? Ours never broke and we use water base lub as well. did i do it right? do i need to test because of anal sex even though we used protection during anal. we both were bottoms and tops on each other |

 Thanks for your question, Condoms are very effective when used correctly, which it sounds like you and your partner did. Effective use includes using (lots of) water based lube, NOT double-bagging, making sure the expiration date hasn't passed. All that being said, we recommend regular HIV/STD testing for all sexually active people. This is because different STDs are passed in different ways. Also, because there's a small risk for HIV from oral sex if you all did that too. Hope this helps! Erik | ||||||||
