HIV Positive or not?

Nov 3, 2011

During labor I was given a rapid HIV test and 11 days later I recieven a phone call saying that the rapid test was positive but the western blot was negitive. They took more blood to run more confirmatory tests and I am going crazy waiting on results! In your opinion what do all these results mean? Thank you.

Response from Mr. Cordova

Hi, there:

Thanks for writing in. You can trust the results of your Western Blot. Pregnancy can induce cross-reacting nonspecific antibodies that can lead to indeterminate or false-positive ELISA HIV-antibody test results. A positive ELISA and a negative Western Blot would be read as NEGATIVE.

Good luck with your new bundle of joy!

In Health, Richard
