question of HIV2

Aug 17, 2011

Hello Dr.Bob! I just want to know if the combination test for Hiv1 and Hiv2 is effective for picking up Hiv2 infection. I am pretty sure its effectiveness on Hiv1: 99% sensitivity, but I was told this combination test is only 60-90% sensitive for Hiv2. so my concern is if this screening test can pick up Hiv2, whether antibody or antigen, when someone has been infected with this subtype virus after 6 months? thanks!

Response from Dr. Frascino

Combination HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody testing is very sensitive for both HIV-1 and HIV-2 (99%).

Dr. Bob

If the risk is non-existence, why am I scared shitless?
