Severe symptoms negative at 21 weeks
Jul 13, 2011

Dr. Bob, Thank you so much for all that you do to keep us from losing our minds. You & God have been my only strength during this difficult time. You answered my previous question.. http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/SafeSex/Q215998.html & I greatly appreciate itbut my severe symptoms persist & I am at my wits end! I have been to 4 doctors & 2 different emergency rooms. No one knows what is wrong with me. I know that you are going to say that you cannot diagnose me over the internet..but I need to know if I still need to consider HIV as a possibility. I am so scared!

My stupid incident happened January 26, 2011. I had a fever of 103 & severe (migraine like) headache for 1 day exactly 9 days after my exposure. Then nothing

I took a 14 week HIV 1/o/2 antibody test & it came back negative

Mid May--- I started bad lower abdominal pain. Urethra started to burn & I alternated from diarrhea to very soft stool. Urine test came back normalbut doc put me on urinary tract infection medicine. It did nothing.

First of June - started having severe neck, shoulder, & back pain. Felt like I had been in a car wreck! Started getting really bad mouth ulcers & arms started to break out in hive/rash like red bumps. Throat got really sore, ears hurt (pain behind ears & ringing in ears), eyes hurt & got blurry, testicles hurt & all joints started to hurt! Lymph nodes started to hurt (almost like a radiating pain). Coughed like crazy!

I had multiple blood tests done. Everything came back normal (SED rate, WBC, thyroid, inflammation, electrolytes,..etc). Doc put me on amoxicillin.. but it did nothing.

I took a 21 week HIV 1/o/2 antibody test & it came back negative

To date I still have all of these symptoms..but they have got worse. I now have white spots on my tonsils & all down the back of my throat. I was strep tested 2 times both negative. My urethra still burns & my lower abdominal pain is too much to handle. I had a CT scan at emergency room but everything was normal. Some lymph nodes are still swollen but most are hard (shotty nodes). Rash/hive like bumps are now on my chest, stomach, arms, & neck. I feel like my immune system & digestive system have both shut down! My body is trying to fight some infection ... but the infection is winning!

What should I do next? Do I need to have a viral load or PCR test just to be sure? Does this sound like HIV infection? I know you will prob say "symptoms are not a good indicator"..but I am scared to death. I am about to give up! I will send a donation your way thank you for any advice you can give! God bless you!

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello.

You've been to four doctors and two emergency rooms, and had numerous HIV tests and a variety of other blood tests and a CT scan. All tests are totally normal, and the multiple physicians were not able to find a physical cause for your symptoms. At this point I would suggest you have an evaluation for psychosomatic disease. Your symptoms could be anxiety related.

Do you still need to worry about HIV? No, you don't.

Good luck.

Dr. Bob
