Delayed seroconversion
Jul 7, 2011

I have a strange question that probably hasn't been asked before: I had given a blood donation (which was recalled before used) a week after my last sexual exposure to someone. I found out info after the donation that made me want to get HIV tested. I had a PCR DNA test at 28 days, and antibody tests at 55, 70, 85, 90 and 97 days.

My question is: would the pint blood donation 7 days last exposure (less red blood cells in my system) slow down the possible HIV virus production or antibody production and thus affect the different tests I had? Would the tests themselves be inaccurate? Thank you for answering.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hi.

Nope! Blood donation would not alter HIV test accuracy or the duration of the seroconversion window period.

You're welcome!

Dr. Bob
