Is blood draw a route for HIV transmission? Jun 5, 2011 Dear Doc, I was advised to visit this forum to address my query. I had a blood draw for some blod tests done on me by phlebotomist during an office visit. The person used a butterfly needle with a vacuatainer. He informed me before hand that he is working with the path lab of reputed concern since long and that a new collection kit is used for every patient. I don't remember seeing him open the needle sachet infront of me. My questions: 1. Can I get HIV from this blood draw procedure? 2. What are the chances, negligible or non-existent? The only thing that bothers me is that except the holder, he threw the needle set with its wrapper, the adapter, the cleaing cloth infront of me in the dustbin of my office. Is this is the official protocol to be followed? I asked him on the phone and he told me not to worry that what he used was a needle from a new sealed pack? Should I trus him??
