Terminated pregnancy and false postive

Mar 29, 2011

Hi Dr Bob,

Is there a chance that a terminated pregnancy at 8 weeks 2.5 years prior to testing could cause a false positive? I was reactive on one band initial test but negative western blot outside of testing window...

Thank you

Response from Dr. Frascino

Yes, pregnancy, past pregnancy and/or terminated pregnancy can result in nonspecific cross-reacting antibodies that could confound HIV-antibody test results. However, I should point out that a reactive initial test (one band or many) with a negative confirmatory Western Blot outside the window period is considered to be a negative HIV test! You can read much more about HIV-diagnostic tests in the archives of this forum.

Be well.

Dr. Bob
