Known HIV Exp. Testing Post PEP
Feb 6, 2011

I have posted on here once before in case you remember me, but I have one final question.

On April 19th, 2010, I found out that I had been having unprotected sex as a top with another man who was HIV+. I began PEP that evening and completed the full regimen 28 days later. There were probably around 8 times that I had unprotected sex with this person in a 5? day span. I have had numerous tests performed since than and recently had an antibody test at my Dr.'s office January 26th that was again, thankfully, negative... even with many symptoms since my exposure: a rash (believed to be PEP caused, changed medication, went away), sore throats, fever, night sweats, you name it.

My HIV specialist stopped following me after the post RNA/antibody/etc. tests but still recommended testing antibodies at 6 months and again at the one year mark as conclusive. However is that necessary at this point? Does the 6 month test confirm that I did not become infected with HIV from the April 19th exposure?

Do you think her 1 year testing guideline was only a precaution for exposures/possible exposures after the 4/19 one? I want to finally rest easy and appreciate how fortunate I am to have (hopefully) not gotten infected by having unprotected sex with someone of at that time, unknown HIV status. Thanks for all you do.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hi,

Guidelines for post-PEP HIV testing recommend HIV-antibody testing at six weeks, three months and six months from the date of exposure. Testing beyond six months is not warranted or necessary.

Dr. Bob
